AWS Announces General Availability Of Amazon Managed Grafana
Fully managed data visualization service gives customers a scalable, secure, and highly available way to visualize operational metrics, logs, and traces across multiple AWS and third-party data sources
"Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS), an Amazon.com, Inc. company (NASDAQ: AMZN), announced the general availability of Amazon Managed Grafana, a fully managed data visualization service that enables customers to instantly query, correlate, and visualize operational metrics, logs, and traces, as well as Internet of Things (IoT) data. Developed in collaboration with Grafana Labs, Amazon Managed Grafana manages the provisioning, setup, scaling, and maintenance of Grafana so customers can easily create dashboards to view operational data from multiple data sources without having to worry about the underlying Grafana infrastructure.

Additionally, built-in security and compliance features like single sign-on, fine-grained access control, and audit reporting mean that customers no longer need to invest time and resources setting up their own infrastructure to manage and audit access to Grafana dashboards. Amazon Managed Grafana also integrates with AWS data sources that collect operational data (e.g. Amazon CloudWatch, Amazon Elasticsearch Service, Amazon Managed Service for Prometheus, etc.) and provides plug-ins for popular third-party data sources (e.g. Graphite, InfluxDB, MySQL, etc.), so customers can easily connect their data sources to Amazon Managed Grafana to get up and running quickly..."

An Integrated Platform Approach To Cloud Security
Organizations need to implement an integrated platform approach to address the various issues that highly distributed cloud environments may introduce
"As more and more enterprises embrace multi-cloud, they need solutions that can connect and secure these complex environments. According to the Flexera 2020 State of the Cloud Report, 93% of enterprise customers reported that they are or were in the process of adopting multi-cloud strategies. However, a majority still plan to use legacy data centers. Indeed, 87% percent of the same respondents also indicated pursuit of a hybrid cloud strategy. With the need to support numerous applications located across multiple data centers, hybrid clouds, and multi-clouds, as well as an ever increasingly sophisticated threat landscape, IT teams face greater complexity and more risks than ever before. Add in expanding compliance requirements, and one can readily see why so many organizations are struggling with cloud security..."

Choose Your Cloud Firewall Wisely
A Next-Generation Firewall (NGFW) is the cornerstone for securing your cloud workloads and data.
"A true NGFW needs to provide the security tools required to ensure legitimate traffic is appropriately routed while illegitimate traffic is blocked. And it also needs to be able to scan traffic for attacks, identify malware, block phishing efforts, and prevent data loss. Whether an organization's compute is on-premises, in a cloud, or across multiple clouds, a next-generation firewall is essential for building your cyber-defense strategy. And for those organizations running a hybrid network, choosing an NGFW solution that provides consistent protection across the distributed network is especially critical..."

How SecOps Teams Can Combat Threats With The Fortinet Security Fabric
Ransomware is a problem for security operations (SecOps) teams everywhere
"They're facing increased volume, velocity, and sophistication of threats. According to the latest Global Threat Landscape report from FortiGuard Labs, ransomware has increased more than tenfold in the last year. Many SecOps teams are already exhausted dealing with an overwhelming number of alerts, but attacks are not letting up anytime soon.

Cybercriminals are focused and relentless, targeting companies in every industry and market including the operational technology (OT) segment. And it's not just a rise in the number of attacks. The severity of the impact that attacks like EKANS, DearCry, and Darkside have had on organizations have increased as well. Threats can come from multiple vectors. The three top ways ransomware can get into the network are:..."

Advancing 5G Innovation Through Our Open Telecom Ecosystem Lab
Collaborating in an open environment focused on technical excellence and business impact to achieve goals.
"Between the 2019 Mobile World Congress and this year's largely virtual event, 5G network deployments have exploded - from just three in South Korea to 165 in over 65 countries. Yet despite the speed of 5G roll out, the real returns on these massive investments lie in the future for most communication service providers (CSPs).

5G's game-changing capacity and latency make for great headlines, but in themselves won't generate game-changing income streams. Instead, they give CSPs a shot at moving beyond connectivity with innovative, high value enterprise services delivered largely at the edge using a cloud framework. With IDC predicting the number of new operational processes deployed on edge infrastructure will grow from under 20% today to over 90% in 2024, there's extraordinary potential..."

This Magic Quadrant, which evaluated ten providers, 'reflects Gartner's definition of 'composable ERP'. This strategy delivers a core of composable applications and, as a service, software platforms that are highly configurable, interoperable, and flexible, in order to adapt to future modern technology.' Oracle was positioned highest on the 'ability to execute' and furthest on the 'completeness of vision' axes...

Frequently Asked Questions About Linux And The GPL
In this post we take a look at some of the frequently asked questions (FAQ) about Linux and the GNU General Public License (GPL).
Q: What's the difference between "free" or "libre" software and open source? Aren't they the same thing?

A: Free software and open source software have a huge overlap, but there are differences worth discussing. The term free software is used to describe software that respects users' freedoms. It's a philosophy and one that many people care about deeply.

Open source originated as a term used to talk about a pragmatic approach to developing software, as well as a definition of what is or isn't an "open source" license. Today it's largely used to describe all software under an open source license without being a deliberate attempt to disown the "free software" philosophy.

Looking Back On 30 Years Of Linux History With Red Hat's Stephen Smoogen
The Linux kernel and the second version of the GNU General Public License (GPLv2) turned 30 this year. As part of that major milestone we asked Red Hatters who had been using or contributing to Linux since the early days about their experiences
"What was it like contributing to Linux, what was it like using it? Could you imagine that Linux would have the impact it's had on the world up until now?

Q: What was your first encounter with Linux? When did you start contributing to the project?

A: My first encounter with Linux was in early 1992, when I was working on a digitized astronomy project. We had been struggling with getting moved from a 1972 miniframe to newer hardware. At first we tried an RTOS, but a professor said: 'Hey, try this other OS and see if you can get it to do what you want'. Where I had been stuck with getting basic email compiled, with Linux I had a fully operational 'Unix-like' system working after 20 floppies...

Using RHEL's Lightweight Kiosk Mode in Edge Deployments
Less is more. This is often the perspective behind requests we see that involve the words "light weight."
"I've come to loosely translate this to mean, "install and/or run only the applications I care about with no fluff."

The motivation can be any number of problems around decreasing the installed footprint for security purposes, maximizing system resources, or perceived stability improvements from using less software (less to go wrong).

Each of these points have their merit in any environment, but they are especially relevant in edge computing which is why we have a new means of deploying RHEL that helps tackle these concerns..."

Leading From A Distance
The Challenge of Leading From a Distance
"As virtual teams become more and more a reality for growing numbers of people, leading them effectively is critica..." - Carl Eidson

"Gone are the days when a leader and team members are all in one location. Leadership has taken on new challenges with the need to be effective across time zones, understand cultural differences, and keep telecommuters engaged and productive.

The number of remote workers is staggering. Reports show:

  • 64 million U.S employees hold a job that allows some telework
  • 50 million workers both could and want to telework
  • Roughly 4.5 million people telework daily
  • 20 - 30 million work from home at least one day per week

A primary reason for NOT exercising the telework option is 'job security.'
